Mystery Quilt Week 4

Hello! I did not forget. I had to work yesterday. So, here is Week 4. Once again, it is dead simple.

All of those strip sets we made last week - take them and cut them into 2" segments. That should make 100 of the LIGHT/MEDIUM and 100 of the LIGHT/DARK. Join these segments RANDOMLY to make 50 LIGHT/MEDIUM four-patch units and 50 LIGHT/DARK units. These should measure 3-1/2" square.

See, not hard at all. If you are behind, now is the time to catch up!  I confess, I am behind!

I should be working today and tomorrow but I took the weekend off. I really hate doing that to the people that have to cover but this weekend all of the kids came home.  Also, tomorrow is my DIL's birthday, Tuesday is our 30th wedding anniversary and Thursday is my youngest son's birthday.  I felt the need to celebrate!

I think the kids are taking us out to supper tonight.

Hope you all are having a great weekend.

Mystery Quilt Week 3

Hello, all.  Did you think I forgot?  I sort of did.  Had a round of vertigo.  Do you know how bad that messes with a person?  I kept thinking about doing this but moving was a bad idea.  Fortunately for me, this week is dead simple.  Don't know that I could handle much more.

Join 10 of the 2" x 21" LIGHT strips to the 2" x 21"
MEDIUM strips to make 10 strip units.
Combine the fabrics at random. The strip units
should measure 3-1/2" wide (raw edge to raw edge)
when sewn. Press seams toward the MEDIUM fabric.

Join the remaining 2" x 21" LIGHT strips to the
2" x 21" DARK strips to make 10 strip units.
Combine the fabrics at random. The strip
units should measure 3-1/2" wide (raw edge to raw
edge) when sewn. Press seams toward the DARK
fabric.

See?  Dead simple.  So, how is going for you?  I would love to see some links to your pictures.

Mystery Quilt: Week 2

Hello, all!  I did not forget you.  It has been an incredibly busy week at work and it just kicked my butt.

So, have you all cut your fabric?  If not, there is plenty of time.  This is a SUPER easy quilt.  This week we will make half square triangles.  You have two options, depending on your preference.  We need to end up with 50 light/medium squares and 50 light/dark. Each square will measure 3 1/2" each way when complete.

My preferred method is to draw a diagonal on the 3 7/8" square light fabric, match it up with a medium (or dark as needed) square and sew a scant quarter inch from each side of the diagonal. Use your rotary cutter to cut ON the line you drew.  You should now have two identical squares when pressed open.  Square up to 3 1/2".

If you prefer, you can cut each 3 7/8" square in half diagonally and then sew.

I am not perfect at this.  That is why I suggested you cut at 4" if you are like me.  Gives you a little room to square up in the end.

Be sure to mix your fabrics up.  Don't pair the same light square with the same medium or dark square each time.  It will add more visual interest to your quilt.

I will be back later this weekend to add some photos.  I haven't sewn mine yet.  That is a good thing.  I was talking with my girlfriend I am intend this for last night.  I some how had in my head she liked purple and blue.  Nope.  Just blues.  I think I will like this better in just blues.  I already have the lights, mediums and one dark.  Just have to trade out my four purples for blues.

Keep me posted if you are playing along.  I would love to see your progress.

Sarah's Star

Hello, all!  I swear I did a lot of sewing last month but no posting for some reason.  We are running full capacity at work which is a 50% increase over anything we have previously done.  Twelve hour shifts really take it out of me.

I have posted a couple of times about Sarah's quilt.  Looking back it appears I finished the top in September.  I finally quilted it this month.

I used an edge to edge design that is a leaf.  It turned out well but it took TWENTY passes to cover the entire quilt.

This thing is HUGE!  It is too big for any of my beds. I had to load it on the frame across the short side and it was about as large as the frame will handle.

Sarah is leaving today for a medical mission to Ecuador.  She is a resident in a surgery program.  I so wanted her to have her quilt before she left.  So, I was going to ship it to her.  I sent her this picture:

And said, "Guess what this is."  She knew right away.  She didn't want to risk the mail and they were coming home the next weekend.  So, it waited.  She was so happy!  She had been on call the night before and up for over 36 hours when they got here.  She covered up with double and triple layers of her new quilt and fell asleep.  f

I have one very poor cell phone picture sent to me after the quilt made it home and on the bed.  I am assured that it is warm but I see new curtains in my son's future because my DIL has excellent decorating taste and those green won't cut it if the quilt stays on the bed.

It has been a long time but I am going to link up for Finish it up Friday with everyone I can find.  Thank you to all the hosts!

At this time the list includes

I also want to mention that in my previous post I started a mystery quilt.  I cannot promise I will consistently post the instructions on the same day of the week but I will post them.  I work an odd rotating schedule and some days are impossible to do anything but work.  Would love to have you join us on our mystery.

Mystery Quilt

Hello, all.  It has been a busy month but I haven't been posting here.  I occasionally host things on FB for some family and friends.  We are doing a mystery quilt.  I thought I would post it on here, also.  If anyone wants to play along I would love to see your pictures.  Post a link to your blog in the comments or email them to me.  No prizes.  Sorry.  Just the fun of playing along.

First up is fabric.  This is a scrappy quilt.  Use that stash!  I hope someone plays along.

Fabric:
1/4 yard each of 5 different light prints
1/4 yard each of 5 different medium prints
1/4 yard each of 5 different dark prints.

You can actually get buy with slightly less than a full fat quarter but need to cut correctly and 1/4 the WOF is fine, too. You will need contrast between your fabrics. I think this quilt will look great scrappy but stick to one type of fabric. In other words, if you are using brights, don't mix with Kansas troubles.

I will also caution you that this will be a 48" by 60" quilt with borders and will you will be working with 6" squares.

FROM EACH OF THE 5 LIGHT PRINTS:

Cut 2 strips, 2" x 42" and cut each in half. If using fat quarters cut four strips 2" x 21". You should end up with 20 light strips.

Cut 1 strip 3 7/8" x 42" and cut in half. If using fat quarters cut two 3 7/8" strips. These will be used to make HSTs. If you have problems with these you may want to cut the strips 4" and cut your squares down later. You should have a total of 10 light strips in this size. Further cut these strips into squares. You should get five squares from each strip for a total of 50 light squares. I recommend storing these in a baggie or tray. At some point they will need a diagonal drawn. You could do that now or at the time you sew them.

FROM EACH OF THE 5 MEDIUM PRINTS:

Cut 1 strips, 2" x 42" and cut in half. If using fat quarters cut two strips 2" x 21". You should end up with 10 medium strips.

Cut 1 strip 3 7/8" x 21". These will be used to make HSTs. If you have problems with these you may want to cut the strips 4" and cut your squares down later. You will have a total of 5 medium strips. Further cut these strips into squares. You should get five squares from each strip for a total of 25 medium squares. I recommend storing these in a baggie or tray so as not to confuse them with the light squares.

FROM EACH OF THE 5 DARK PRINTS:

Cut 1 strips, 2" x 42" and cut in half. If using fat quarters cut two strips 2" x 21". You should end up with 10 dark strips.

Cut 1 strip 3 7/8" x 21". These will be used to make HSTs. If you have problems with these you may want to cut the strips 4" and cut your squares down later. You will have a total of 5 dark strips. Further cut these strips into squares. You should get five squares from each strip for a total of 25 medium squares. I recommend storing these in a baggie or tray so as not to confuse them with the light or medium squares.
